For most Southeast Asian VoAs (Thailand, Bali, Cambodia), travel insurance is not required for the visa — but it is extremely strongly recommended regardless. Bangkok: SuperRich Thailand (orange logo) at Siam Square, CentralWorld, or in Suvarnabhumi arrivals. Accepts INR directly. Best rate in the city, no commission.

Bali: PT Central Kuta or authorised money changers on Jalan Legian, Seminyak. Always do the maths before handing over money — confirm the rate and count the notes in front of the cashier.

Everywhere: never exchange at hotels. Hotel exchange desks offer 5–8% below market rate. On ₹30,000 exchanged, that's ₹1,500–2,400 lost. Hotels know you're captive; they exploit it.

Both. The practical split:

Card: Hotels, malls, Grab, airlines, large restaurants. Use a card with zero/low forex markup — some Axis Bank, HDFC, and ICICI cards offer 0–1% markup vs the standard 3.5%.

Cash (local currency): Street food, markets (Chatuchak, Platinum Mall stalls), tuk-tuks, massage shops, smaller local restaurants, temple entry. Markets are almost universally cash-only.

ATM tip: Bangkok ATMs charge ฿220 (~₹510) flat per withdrawal regardless of amount. Withdraw larger amounts less often. Bali ATMs charge Rp 50,000–75,000 (~₹260–390) per transaction.

VoA fee: THB 2,000 (~₹5,900) cash on arrival — many people forget to bring THB and scramble for an ATM.
ATM fees: ฿220 per Bangkok ATM withdrawal. Non-negotiable.
Expressway toll: Taxis add ฿25–75 in tolls when using the expressway — this is legitimate, pay it.
Rooftop bar minimums: Sky Bar and Vertigo have ฿1,500–2,000 (₹3,480–4,640) minimum spends. Budget accordingly.

To Seminyak/Kuta/Canggu: 20–40 minutes, IDR 100,000–150,000 (~₹520–780) by metered taxi (Bluebird) or Grab. Do NOT accept the "fixed price" drivers inside the terminal who quote IDR 250,000+. Exit the terminal, cross to the official taxi rank, use Bluebird or book Grab.

To Ubud: 1–1.5 hours, IDR 200,000–350,000 (~₹1,040–1,820) by Grab or pre-arranged driver. No public transport option worth taking.

Nyepi is Bali's Hindu New Year — a 24-hour period of complete silence and stillness. In 2026, it falls on March 19.

During Nyepi: the airport closes (no flights in or out), streets are empty, all lights must be off by 6pm, and foreigners must stay in their hotel or villa. No exceptions.

Sounds restrictive — and it is. But experiencing Nyepi from a private pool villa, with Bali completely silent and dark, is genuinely one of the most extraordinary things you can witness as a traveller. If you can schedule your trip around it, do. Just don't plan to arrive or depart on that day.

Yes — Bali consistently ranks among the best destinations for solo female travellers globally. Balinese culture is deeply respectful. Tourist areas (Seminyak, Ubud, Canggu) have large communities of solo female travellers and are very safe.

Practical notes: stay in guesthouses or hotels with reception (not isolated private villas alone). Ubud has excellent hostel communities with other solo travellers. BKK (Suvarnabhumi) — the main international airport, 30km east of the city. Used by Air India, Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways, and many IndiGo routes. Has the Airport Rail Link (₹145, 30 min to city centre).

DMK (Don Mueang) — the budget carrier airport, 24km north. Used by IndiGo (especially Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai direct flights), AirAsia, Nok Air. No rail link — bus or taxi only.

IndiGo splits between both airports. Always check your actual terminal before planning. Many Indians arrive at DMK without realising it, then head to the wrong transfer pickup point for BKK.

Grab is Southeast Asia's Uber — a ride-hailing app that works in Bangkok, Bali, Singapore, KL, and most major SE Asian cities. Install it before you fly, add your Indian debit/credit card, and it works from minute one.

In Bangkok, Grab should be your default transport option. It shows fixed prices upfront (no negotiation), has driver tracking, and you can share your route. Metered taxis are fine but some drivers refuse tourists or won't run the meter. Grab eliminates that problem entirely. For airport transfers, hotel pickups, and any journey where the BTS doesn't go — Grab.

The BTS Skytrain is Bangkok's elevated metro — air-conditioned, fast, and covers all the main tourist areas (Siam, Sukhumvit, Silom, Chatuchak). Buy a Rabbit Card (฿100 deposit + ฿100 minimum load) at any BTS station on Day 1. Tap in, tap out — exactly like Delhi Metro. Saves 10% on every fare. Refundable when you leave.

Google Maps routes work perfectly for BTS navigation. The MRT subway runs the complementary underground network. Together they cover 90% of what an Indian tourist needs in Bangkok.

Yes — and it's world-class. Bangkok street food is regulated, has incredibly high turnover (food never sits), and Thais themselves eat it three times a day. It is genuinely safer than most restaurant kitchens because the volume means everything is always freshly cooked.

The rule: eat where Thai people are eating in large numbers. A stall with a queue of locals is the safest, freshest, most delicious option. A stall near a tourist attraction with no Thais around and a laminated English menu? Proceed with caution.

Pad Thai, som tum, khao pad, satay — all safe from busy stalls. Avoid pre-cooked food left on display in the heat for extended periods.

No. Bangkok tap water is not safe for drinking. Drink bottled water — 7-Elevens are everywhere and a 1.5L bottle costs ฿10–15 (~₹23–35). No — and this is the most common Bangkok planning mistake. Chatuchak Weekend Market is open Saturday and Sunday only, approximately 8am–6pm. Saturday morning is the sweet spot: less crowded, cooler, freshly stocked stalls.

The smaller Chatuchak plant and pet sections open on Wednesdays and Thursdays, but the full 15,000-stall market is weekends only. If your Bangkok itinerary doesn't include a Saturday or Sunday, plan to skip Chatuchak and go to Platinum Mall or MBK instead.

Thailand bans alcohol sales on national Buddhist holidays. Key 2026 dates:

Bangkok is very safe for Indian tourists. Violent crime against tourists is rare. The real risks are:

1. Scams (see below — the gem shop, tuk-tuk, card game, and fake TDAC website scams are the big ones)
2. Traffic — Bangkok traffic is genuine chaos. Look both ways everywhere, especially on one-way streets where motorbikes travel the wrong way
3. Heat — genuine heat risk May–October at 40°C+ with humidity. Carry water, take shade breaks, watch for heat exhaustion

Tourist Police: 1155 (24-hour English hotline). Save it before you arrive.

Bangkok's most famous tourist scam, running for 30+ years.

How it works: A friendly local near the Grand Palace tells you the temple is "closed for a special royal event today." He knows a tuk-tuk driver who'll take you to another temple. The tuk-tuk takes you to a gem shop where you're pressured to buy overpriced sapphires or rubies as "investments."

The truth: The Grand Palace is NEVER closed for random events. The friendly local is paid per tourist he delivers to the shop. The "gems" are glass or wildly overpriced.

How to avoid: Walk past anyone outside major attractions telling you it's closed. Check Google Maps opening hours from your hotel. The moment anyone offers a free tuk-tuk ride, the destination is a shop.

Bali is very safe — petty crime is low and violent crime against tourists is extremely rare. Main scams:

Money changer rip-off: Unlicensed changers offer great rates, then do sleight-of-hand with the notes. Count your money carefully at authorised changers. Never change at shops that display unusually high rates.
Taxi overcharging: Non-metered taxis quote 3–5× going rate. Use Grab or Bluebird taxis only (blue cars with meters).
Photocopy driving licence: Some police checkpoints flag tourists without an International Driving Permit (IDP) and ask for a "fine" on the spot. Get an IDP from your RTO before leaving India (₹500, 1 day).
Beach massage pressure: Quoted ₹500, expected ₹2,000+. Agree all prices explicitly before starting. Say "berapa harga?" (how much?)

Yes — with one important exception. Never drink arak (local rice spirit) from an unknown source. Bali has had documented cases of methanol poisoning from illegally produced arak sold to tourists in cheap bars and beach clubs. Multiple deaths have occurred.

Bintang beer, Balinese wines, and cocktails at reputable bars and restaurants are completely safe. Stick to sealed, commercially produced spirits. If something tastes wrong, don't drink more of it.

Bangkok: Bumrungrad International Hospital and Bangkok Hospital are among the best private hospitals in Asia — genuinely world-class. In Indonesia (including Bali), drug trafficking can carry the death penalty. This is not an exaggeration. Several foreigners have been executed in Indonesia for drug offences. There is no embassy intervention that will save you if you are caught with drugs in Bali. Don't.

Yes — you can carry prescription medicines for personal use. Always carry:
· The original prescription from your Indian doctor
· The medicine in its original labelled packaging
· A doctor's letter if carrying controlled substances (some pain medications, sleep aids, antidepressants)

Medicines containing codeine, pseudoephedrine, or certain sedatives may be controlled substances in Thailand or Indonesia even if freely prescribed in India. Carry quantities appropriate for your trip length plus a few days' buffer. Declare at customs if carrying large quantities.

Both work well. The real question is what's convenient for you:

Yes — both Thailand and Indonesia use 220V/50Hz (identical to India). Standard Indian Type C plugs (2 round pins) fit directly into Thai and Balinese sockets. No adapter needed for most modern Indian phone chargers, laptop power bricks, or USB hubs.

Bangkok: Excellent. 4G/5G coverage throughout the city. Most hotels and cafes have reliable WiFi. Canggu (Bali) and Ubud have developed strong digital nomad infrastructure with fast fibre at co-working spaces. Speeds of 50–200Mbps are normal in good Bangkok hotels and Canggu co-working cafes.

Weak spots: North Bali, rural temple areas, and some beach areas in both countries have patchy coverage. If you're working remotely and need reliability, stay in Bangkok/Canggu rather than remote Ubud guesthouses or island-hopping destinations.

Sometimes — but check Indian customs limits first. India allows a duty-free allowance of ₹50,000 per adult on goods brought from abroad. Above that, customs duty applies at 35% + education cess.

In practice: Buying one phone for personal use at MBK Centre (Bangkok's electronics mall) and bringing it back is generally overlooked by Indian customs. Buying multiple high-value devices risks duty. Thai warranty on electronics may not be honoured in India.

What does work: your Indian Visa/Mastercard debit or credit card for contactless/chip payments at shops, hotels, and restaurants that accept cards. Grab accepts Indian cards. Large malls accept contactless cards.

Exception: Some Singapore and Malaysia merchants accept UPI (as part of bilateral UPI agreements) — but this doesn't currently apply to Thailand or Bali.

The rule for both: Shoulders covered. Knees covered. No ripped clothing. No shoes inside.

Bali temples: A sarong (kain) must be worn over your legs — temples provide them for a small donation or free. Shoes off before entering inner temple areas. No menstruating women inside certain temples (signs are posted).

Bangkok temples (Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun): Full shoulder cover (no tank tops). Full leg cover (no shorts — not even Bermuda shorts). No see-through fabrics. Shoes off inside temple buildings. Sarongs available for hire at entrances for ฿20–30.
