Dubai has two international airports. Almost all Indian flights land at DXB. Check your ticket — they're 40km apart and getting between them costs ₹2,500+ by taxi.

Follow signs to "Immigration — Arrivals". Indians on tourist visit: join the "All Passports" queue or look for e-Gate lanes (biometric). Typical queue time 10–30 min. Currency Exchange
Exchange a small amount (₹5,000–8,000 worth of AED) at the Al Ansari Exchange counter in arrivals — it's significantly better than the bank counters. Don't exchange everything here; better rates exist at Al Ansari and UAE Exchange branches in the city. You need AED for the taxi or Metro — have at least AED 50 ready.

Metro or Taxi to Hotel
Metro (recommended): Follow signs to "Dubai Metro — Red Line". Buy a Nol card (AED 6 + top up) from the vending machine. Airport to Downtown Dubai: AED 12.50, 20 minutes, air-conditioned. Taxi (alternative): Join the official RTA taxi queue at arrivals — metered, safe, AED 50–80 to Downtown. Never use unmarked "taxis" offered inside the terminal.

Nol Card Setup (Metro)
The Nol card (AED 6 for the card + top up) is your key to the entire Dubai Metro, buses, water taxis, and even some car parks. Top up at vending machines in any station. Tap in and out at yellow card readers. Without tapping out, you'll be charged the maximum fare. Keep AED 20+ credit loaded at all times — running out mid-journey is inconvenient.

Nol card tip: Load AED 50 on your Nol card at the start of your trip. It covers Metro, bus, and water taxi (Abra). Keep it — if you return to Dubai it still works. Children under 5 travel free. Tapping out is mandatory — forgetting to tap out charges you the maximum fare for that journey.

Scams & Laws That Catch Indians
READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO
Dubai is one of the world's safest cities — street crime is almost non-existent. But certain laws and tourist traps catch Indian first-timers every year. These are mostly legal issues, not theft. The UAE legal system is strict — ignorance is not a defence.
Fake Taxi / Unmarked Cars
At DXB arrivals, men inside the terminal offer "taxi" rides. These are unlicensed and unmetered — typically 3–4× the real fare. Common targets: newly arrived passengers with luggage.
✓ Avoid: Always use the official RTA taxi queue outside arrivals, or book Careem before landing. Official taxis are cream/beige coloured with a meter.
Gold Souk "Cashback" Scheme
Shop owners offer inflated-price gold with a promised "cashback" or "discount later". The cashback never materialises, or the gold's making charges are hidden. Targets Indians who assume gold prices are fixed.
✓ Avoid: Compare gold rates at 2–3 shops before buying. Gold rate is standardised (per gram posted daily); only making charges (typically AED 5–15/gram) are negotiable. Get a receipt showing exact gold weight and purity.
Alcohol in Public (Law, Not Scam)
Drinking alcohol in public spaces (streets, beaches, parks, metro) is illegal — even if you bought it legally from a licensed venue. Indian tourists sometimes step outside a restaurant with a drink. This can result in a fine or arrest.
✓ Rule: Alcohol only inside licensed restaurants, bars, hotel rooms, and designated areas. Never carry an open drink in public. Zero tolerance — no warnings given.
Photo of Government Buildings
Photographing government buildings, military installations, ports, police stations, or certain royal residences is illegal. Some Indian tourists photograph everything without knowing — this can lead to camera confiscation or questioning.
✓ Rule: Don't photograph buildings with "No Photography" signs or uniformed police/military. Tourist attractions (Burj Khalifa, malls, beaches) are completely fine. When in doubt, ask.
Counterfeit Goods (Serious Offence)
Buying fake designer goods (Rolex, Louis Vuitton, etc.) is a criminal offence in the UAE — not just for the seller but the buyer. Deira and some souks have sellers who approach tourists. Getting caught carrying fakes can mean confiscation, fines, and deportation.
✓ Rule: Do not buy fake luxury goods. If something is suspiciously cheap, walk away. Dubai is actually very good for genuine discounted luxury goods at legitimate outlets.
Ramadan Public Eating Fine
During Ramadan, eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight hours is illegal — this applies to tourists of all religions including Indians and non-Muslims. Restaurant windows are screened during the day. Some tourists don't know and eat snacks on the street.
✓ Rule: Check Ramadan dates before your trip. If visiting during Ramadan, only eat inside hotel rooms or screened restaurants during daytime. After sunset (Iftar), everything opens normally.

Culture, Customs & What Not to Do
IMPORTANT FOR INDIANS
Dubai is very welcoming to Indian tourists — over 3.5 million Indians live here. But the UAE is an Islamic state with clear social norms. These aren't difficult to follow; you just need to know them before you arrive.

Dress modestly outside beach, pool, and hotel areas — shoulders and knees covered in malls, souks, and streets
Greet with "As-salamu alaykum" if meeting Emirati locals — always warmly received and appreciated
Ask permission before photographing people — especially Emirati women in traditional dress
Use your right hand for giving and receiving — left hand considered unclean in Islamic culture
Stand when the UAE national anthem plays — you may encounter it at events or hotel lobbies
Carry cash and card — some souks are cash-only; some luxury places prefer card
Book attractions and restaurants in advance especially Nov–Mar — popular places fill up fast
Respect mosque prayer times — shops may briefly close, some restaurants pause during Adhan

Never make rude gestures at drivers or in public — a raised middle finger can lead to police complaint and detention

Do not use offensive language or swear in public — shouting, arguing loudly, or abusive language can lead to fines
Do not wear swimwear outside the beach/pool area — a beach coverup is required when walking to/from the beach
Never carry prescription drugs without documentation — some common Indian medicines are controlled substances in UAE
Do not enter a mosque without permission or appropriate clothing — mosques open to tourists have guides and dress-up areas
Do not criticise the royal family or government — not even privately to someone you just met
Prescription medicines: Several common Indian medicines contain controlled substances in the UAE. Cough syrups with codeine, some sleeping pills, and certain pain medications require a doctor's letter and UAE Ministry of Health approval in advance. Check the
MOHAP website before travel if you take regular prescription medicines.
