Power Adapter โ€” The One Indians Always Forget

IMPORTANT: YOU NEED AN ADAPTER

Unlike Thailand, Dubai uses UK-style Type G sockets (3 rectangular pins). Indian devices use Type C (2 round pins) or Type D/M (3 round pins) โ€” neither fits a UAE socket directly. You need a Type G adapter. Buy one before you fly (โ‚น200โ€“500 on Amazon India) โ€” airport options in Dubai are expensive.

๐Ÿ”ด
Type C (Indian)
2 round pins ยท standard Indian plug
Your typical phone charger uses a Type C plug. This does NOT fit UAE sockets. You need a Type G adapter โ€” without it, your charger is useless in Dubai.
โœ— DOES NOT FIT UAE SOCKETS
๐ŸŸข
Type G (UAE)
3 rectangular pins ยท British standard
Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and all UAE uses Type G. Buy a universal travel adapter on Amazon India (โ‚น250โ€“500) before leaving. The adapter converts your Indian 2-pin or 3-pin into Type G. Alternatively, buy one on arrival at Dubai airport (AED 35โ€“70).
โœ“ REQUIRED FOR ALL INDIAN DEVICES
โšก
Voltage
UAE: 220โ€“240V / 50Hz
Good news: UAE voltage (220โ€“240V) is identical to India. No voltage converter needed โ€” just the physical plug adapter. All modern phone, laptop, and camera chargers handle 100โ€“240V automatically.
โœ“ NO VOLTAGE CONVERTER NEEDED
Quick fix on arrival: If you forgot your adapter, buy one at Dubai Airport (AED 35โ€“70) in the arrivals area. Alternatively, most Dubai hotels provide universal adapters at the front desk โ€” ask on check-in. For a week's trip, buying one at Amazon India (โ‚น250) before travel is far cheaper.
๐Ÿ’ก MULTI-PORT USB CHARGER TIP
Buy a multi-port USB charging brick that connects via a single Type G plug into the wall, then charges multiple devices via USB-A/USB-C ports. One adapter, one plug โ€” charges phone, power bank, and earbuds simultaneously. Anker, Portronics, and Syska make good ones for โ‚น700โ€“1,500 on Amazon India.

โœ… BEST WAY TO HANDLE MONEY
BESTNiyo Global / HDFC Forex card โ€” zero markup on AED, use like a debit card everywhere. Preload INR, converts automatically at mid-market rate. Best for cards in Dubai.
GOODAl Ansari Exchange (branches in every mall) โ€” best cash exchange rate in Dubai. Accepts INR directly. Better rates than airport money changers.
OKAirport Exchange (arrivals) โ€” not the best rate but useful for getting AED 200โ€“300 for the taxi. Exchange the rest at Al Ansari in the mall.
โŒ AVOID THESE
WORSTHotel forex desks โ€” convenient but 5โ€“8% below market. On AED 1,000 exchanged you lose โ‚น1,200โ€“1,900 vs Al Ansari.
BADRandom money changers in souk areas โ€” not licensed, may shortchange. Only use Bank of UAE or Al Ansari Exchange.
BADIndian bank international debit card โ€” 3.5โ€“5% forex markup every transaction. Use Niyo or Forex card instead.
How much cash to carry: Dubai is extremely card-friendly โ€” even taxis and street food stalls accept Visa/Mastercard. Carry AED 200โ€“400 cash for souks, tips, and small vendors. Keep your Niyo/forex card for everything else. ATMs are everywhere but Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADCB) charges AED 20+ per withdrawal.

eSIM & SIM Cards for Dubai

INSTALL BEFORE FLYING

Dubai has excellent 5G coverage. Important note: VoIP calls (WhatsApp calls, Skype, FaceTime, Google Meet) may be restricted in the UAE โ€” use regular calls or a VPN. The best approach is an eSIM activated before boarding so you have data the moment you land.

๐ŸŒ
MOST POPULAR ยท EASY SETUP
Airalo UAE
Buy and install before boarding in India. Data activates on landing โ€” no airport queue, no SIM swap. Works on iPhone XS+, Samsung Galaxy S20+, most 2020+ Android. UAE plans from 1GB to 20GB. Note: VoIP restrictions still apply to your calls even on Airalo.

UNLIMITED DATA
Holafly UAE
Truly unlimited data โ€” no throttling. Best for heavy Google Maps use, hotspotting, Instagram uploads. 5, 7, 10 day plans. Still subject to UAE VoIP restrictions โ€” but data browsing and hotspot work perfectly. Use code FACTVISIT for 10% off.

LOCAL SIM ยท BEST COVERAGE
du / Etisalat (Airport)
Available at du and Etisalat counters in Dubai Airport (Terminals 1, 2 and 3). Show passport to register โ€” takes 10 minutes. Local SIMs allow WhatsApp voice calls (Etisalat specifically enables this for tourists). 10GB for 10 days for AED 65 (~โ‚น1,500). Best option if VoIP calls are important to you.

โš ๏ธ VoIP in UAE: WhatsApp calls, FaceTime, Google Meet, and Skype calls are technically restricted in the UAE. Text messages and internet browsing work fine. Some users access VoIP via VPN (note: personal VPN for privacy is generally tolerated in UAE though technically in a grey area). If calls are critical, get a local du or Etisalat SIM which now allows WhatsApp voice calls for tourists.

Travel Insurance for Dubai

DON'T SKIP THIS
Why insurance matters in Dubai: Dubai's private hospitals (Mediclinic, American Hospital, Cleveland Clinic) deliver world-class care at world-class prices. A single night in hospital for a heat-related emergency can cost AED 5,000โ€“15,000 (โ‚น1.16Lโ€“โ‚น3.5L). Summer heat exhaustion risk is real. Travel insurance for 5 nights in Dubai costs โ‚น900โ€“2,500 and covers this entirely.

Tipping Guide for Dubai

GENERALLY EXPECTED IN SERVICE INDUSTRY

Tipping in Dubai is more expected than in Southeast Asia, but less aggressive than the US. Service staff (many from India, Philippines, and Sri Lanka) earn modest salaries and rely on tips. Bills in restaurants often include a 10% service charge โ€” check before adding more.

ServiceTip Amount (AED)โ‰ˆ INRMandatory?
Restaurant (sit-down)10โ€“15% if no service charge addedโ€”CHECK BILL FIRST

Dubai tipping culture: Unlike Bangkok, tipping is more built-in to Dubai service culture. Many service workers (hospitality, taxis, hotels) are from South Asia and honestly appreciate it. A 10% tip on a AED 100 restaurant bill (โ‚น233) is minimal for you but meaningful for a service worker earning AED 1,500/month. Check if "service charge" is already on the bill before adding more.

Buy in Dubai, Not India

TAX-FREE ยท GENUINE SAVINGS

Dubai is technically not tax-free anymore (5% VAT since 2018) but it's still significantly cheaper than India for many categories โ€” especially electronics and gold. Luxury brands sold in Dubai are often 15โ€“25% cheaper than Indian prices because of lower import duties and brand positioning.

๐Ÿ’›
Gold & Jewellery
Gold Souk in Deira โ€” one of the world's largest gold markets. 24K gold is priced at international rates + very low making charges. Indian gold attracts high import duty โ€” Dubai gold is 15โ€“20% cheaper. Hallmarked and trustworthy.
Making charges: AED 2โ€“8/gram vs India's โ‚น300+/gram
๐Ÿ“ฑ
Electronics
iPhones, Sony cameras, Canon lenses, Samsung Galaxy flagship: Dubai prices are 10โ€“20% cheaper than India after Indian import duty. Buy from Virgin Megastore or Jumbo Electronics with official UAE warranty. Check warranty coverage in India before buying.
iPhone 16 Pro: ~โ‚น95K in Dubai vs โ‚น1.2L in India
๐Ÿ‘œ
Luxury Brands
Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Dior, Rolex โ€” Dubai's duty structure means luxury goods are 10โ€“20% cheaper than India. Tax refund (VAT back) available at airport on purchases over AED 250. Keep all receipts. Dubai Mall has the widest luxury selection in the region.
VAT refund: 5% back on eligible purchases at airport
๐ŸŒน
Perfumes & Oud
Dubai is the world capital of oud (agarwood) perfume. Gold Souk perfume shops, Arabian Oud, and Ajmal sell the best quality at prices far below what you'd pay importing to India. Customised blending available. Also: international designer fragrances are 30โ€“40% cheaper than India.
Good oud: AED 50โ€“500 ยท International frag: AED 100โ€“300
๐Ÿซ
Chocolates & Dates
Premium Bateel dates (world famous), Godiva, Patchi โ€” Dubai sells high-quality gift chocolates and luxury dates you can't easily get in India. Excellent as gifts. Pack in carry-on to avoid crushing. Not cheaper than India necessarily but unique to Dubai and the region.
Bateel dates: AED 80โ€“300 per box
๐Ÿ‘—
Fashion & Sportswear
Nike, Adidas, Under Armour, Zara โ€” these are 10โ€“25% cheaper in Dubai vs India. H&M, Marks & Spencer, and Uniqlo have full ranges. Dubai Mall has over 1,200 stores. Sports Direct is also present for budget sportswear. End-of-season sales (DSF) offer additional 30โ€“50% off.
Nike running shoe: AED 200โ€“350 (~โ‚น4,700โ€“8,200)
๐Ÿบ
Spices & Souvenirs
Deira Spice Souk โ€” saffron (Iranian, cheaper than India), dried fruits, rose water, exotic spices. Bargain hard. Camel milk chocolate, Arabic coffee sets, hand-painted items. Don't buy from hotel shops. Spice Souk prices are 50โ€“70% lower than mall gift shops.
Iranian saffron: AED 30โ€“80 per gram (Indian price: โ‚น5,000+/gram)
๐Ÿงด
Skincare & Beauty
La Mer, SK-II, Sulwhasoo, NARS โ€” premium skincare brands are 15โ€“30% cheaper than Indian prices. Dubai Duty Free at the airport has excellent prices. Sephora in Dubai Mall has the widest range. Buy from duty-free on departure for best price with VAT already off.
La Mer moisturiser: AED 280 vs โ‚น9,000+ in India
โš ๏ธ Customs limit when returning to India: Duty-free allowance from UAE to India: gold jewellery up to โ‚น50,000 (men) / โ‚น1,00,000 (women), duty-free goods up to โ‚น50,000 in value. Beyond this, customs duty applies. Keep invoices. Undeclared gold above the limit can be confiscated at Indian airports.

Dubai Essentials FAQ

Do I really need a power adapter for Dubai? Can't I just use my Indian charger?
Yes, you need a Type G (UK 3-pin) adapter. Unlike Thailand (which accepts Indian 2-round-pin plugs), UAE sockets only accept rectangular 3-pin plugs. Your Indian round-pin charger will not physically fit. Buy a universal travel adapter on Amazon India for โ‚น250โ€“500 before you fly. Dubai airport adapters cost AED 35โ€“70.
Can I use WhatsApp voice calls in Dubai?
With a local du or Etisalat SIM: yes โ€” they now enable WhatsApp voice calls for tourists. With an eSIM or standard international plan: WhatsApp voice calls are technically restricted in the UAE. Text messages, data, and hotspot work fine on all SIMs. Many users access VoIP via personal VPN which is generally tolerated. For the clearest experience, buy a local UAE SIM on arrival.
How much AED cash should I carry for Dubai?
Dubai is extremely card-friendly โ€” taxis, restaurants, and most shops accept Visa/Mastercard without issue. Carry AED 200โ€“400 cash for the Gold Souk (vendors prefer cash), tips, and smaller vendors. Exchange at Al Ansari Exchange for the best rate, not hotel desks. Use a Niyo or forex card for everything else.
Are there any dress code rules for Dubai I need to know?
Yes โ€” Dubai has public decency laws. At malls, restaurants, and attractions: normal casual wear is fine. At mosques: women must cover hair, shoulders, and legs; men must cover shoulders and legs. At souks and markets: modest dress recommended (shoulders covered). At beaches and hotel pools: swimwear is fine, but cover up when leaving the beach area. Avoid very revealing clothing in public areas outside beach/pool zones.
Can I bring prescription medicines to Dubai?
Most prescription medications allowed in India are also permitted in UAE. However, certain medications (some opioids, anxiety medications, antidepressants) require prior approval from the UAE Ministry of Health. Carry a prescription letter from your doctor in English. Keep medicines in original labelled packaging. Check the MOH UAE website or Dubai airport customs for specific controlled substances before travel.
